Cap Rock area includes the popular Ryan Mountain hike , Ryan Ranch and the Hall of Horrors Trails. The Cap Rock Trail is the easiest at only .7 miles.

Cap Rock Trail / Gram Parsons

Length .7 miles | elevation 39 feet | easy loop

Directions: From the north entrance stay on Park Bvld for approx 20 miles. past Hidden Valley and turn right on Keyes View rd.

Cap Rock is a very unique rock formation with lots of boulders to climb on.great place to stop for lunch and use one of the picnic tables.A large parking lot and rest rooms make it a good choice later in the day as some of the othe places with smaller parking lots fill up .

Cap Rock Trail is a short easy hike for all ages with very little elevation gain. The main trail, easy to follow and clearly marked, takes you through boulders and cacti. You can also veiw the spot Gram Parsons, a main singer / guitar player for the Flying Burrito Brothers, was given an Indian burial (burned in effigy).

Hall of Horrors

Length .6 miles | elevation 26 feet | easy loop

Directions: From the north entrance stay on Park Bvld. past Ryan Ranch Campground and look for trail parking and sign on the left.

Hall of Horrors is a popular mountain climbing spot with lots of boulders. There are no picnic tables but there is a rest room. the parking lot is medium - small and can fill up quickly.

Short hike easily navagates through 2 rock structures. Follow any of the paths or make your own. You can extend the hike by going around the 2nd rock structure too. There is a hard to find mini slot canyon ( Hall of Horrors) in the 2nd rock formation. You need to climb up some boulders to reach it. This is a popular destination.

Ryan Mountain Trail

Length 3 miles | elevation 1069 feet | moderate out and back

Directions: From the north entrance stay on Park Bvld. past Ryan Ranch Campground & Hall of Horrors, then look for trail parking and sign on the right.

Ryan Mountain is probably the most strenuous hike in the park and the most rewarding with spectacular views of the Joshua Tree National Monument. Rest Rooms and a large parking lot are available.

The trail is easy to follow with beautiful views. It does have a 1,069 ft incline over 1.5 miles. This is a popular hike so get here early and bring lots of water as there is no shade. keep an eye out for Big Horn Sheep which can be found in the area.

Ryan Ranch Trail

Length 1.5 miles | elevation 134 feet | easy loop

Directions: From the north entrance stay on Park Bvld. past Ryan Ranch Campground & Hall of Horrors, then look for trail parking and sign on the right.

Ryan Ranch Trail is an easy loop about one and a half miles in length. The trail to the ruins is easily marked, but ater that not as much . The last part is following Park back the the parking lot. There is a medium sized parking lot and rest rooms.

Easy hike takes you up to the old Ryan Ranch. It is fun to explore the old ruins. There is an outcroping of large boulders that can be easily climbed and explored. If you hike around the boulders you can pick up the trail that will loop back to the road (a little further up from the parking) or hike back the way you came.
